How to recover from dysentery

Dysentery is a term used to describe inflammation of the large intestine caused by an infection. Dysentery causes abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, and severe diarrhea, which may contain blood and mucus. The most common bacterial infection is called Shigella, often known as shigellosis. Other examples you may have heard of include salmonella and cholera. Complete recovery of dysentery can be extended from two to four weeks.

1. Consult your doctor and get an accurate of what is causing the symptoms associated with dysentery diagnosis: abdominal pain, vomiting, fever and severe diarrhea.

2. Drink plenty of fluids. Depending on the severity of dysentery, you may need to stay in the hospital and receive intravenous rehydration. In any case salts for rehydration are more effective than water to recover lost fluids, so follow the advice of your doctor.

3. Follow your doctor's instructions about medications. You can prescribe antibiotics to kill the bacteria that cause your dysentery symptoms.

4. Practice good personal hygiene. Dysentery can be transmitted by exposure to feces. Always wash your hands carefully with soap after going to the bathroom. Also wash before touching any food.

5. Get enough rest. It is important that you sleep a lot and well. Do not go to work or school, and minimize contact with others to avoid contagion.
