How to Treat a Broken Arm or Dislocated Shoulders

Broken arms and dislocated shoulders can happen anywhere. In most cases, you can take the injured person to a hospital or call an ambulance. But if you're hiking, camping or hunting and watching someone with a broken arm or shoulder injury , you can help in these conditions. You should tie a simple sling to immobilize the arm and shoulder joint until the injured person can receive adequate medical care. You can hold a sling or a square piece of cloth, in emergency situations, a scarf or a belt will suffice.


You will need to:

  • Cloth
  • Scarf
  • Belt


Instructions:

1. Apply bandages on open wounds before immobilize the arm in a sling.

2. Fold the fabric into a square with a length of 1 meter on each side. Fold the square diagonally across itself to form a triangle. This will result in a triangle with a base of approximately 70 centimeters and sides of 50 centimeters.

3. Place the injured arm at a 90-degree angle, flexing the elbow and keeping the arm in place against the injured person's torso.

4. Place the fabric under the arm to the elbow rests on the point opposite the longest side or the top of the triangle triangle.

5. Bring one end of the fabric up and around the neck on the left side. Take the other end of the fabric up and around the neck on the right side.

6. Link these two ends of the fabric with a square knot. Leave enough slack so that the arm hang at an angle of 90 degrees when the person stand.

10. Wear one of the ends of the scarf or a belt, behind the neck on the left side. Carry the other end up and behind the neck on the right side.

11. Tie the two ends of the scarf in a square knot behind the neck. If you wear a belt, place the buckle behind your neck. Leave enough slack in the handkerchief or belt so that the arm is held at a 90-degree angle.

Tips

  • If you think the injured person has broken his arm, fix a splint around it in the first place.
